The idea came during one of the most stressful weeks of my final trimester in March 2025. Between wrapping up my capstone project (which was only 40% complete at the time!) and deadlines at work, I suddenly realized I had to create my timetable for the new semester.
For me, timetable planning wasn't just about classes—it often determined how well I could perform. I had work on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, which meant I could only take classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Finding a timetable that avoided early mornings, fit my preferred tutors, and didn't clash with work easily took me 2-3 hours of frustrating trial and error.
"F**k it. Why not just build a tool that does this for me?"
Also, Claude Code had just dropped. I decided to give it a shot. Within three hours, I built the first version of a timetable viewer. It wasn't perfect—I didn't scrape the university's website but instead uploaded a JSON file of the timetable data. Still, when I shared it with a few friends, the feedback was incredible. Many students faced the same struggle, and my tool gave them a faster, simpler way to plan.
During this exchange over the WhatsApp group, another student, Riva, shared a project she had built: a WAM/GPA calculator that instantly parsed grades directly from SOLS. It solved another tedious problem—no more entering subject codes, credits, and grades one by one. Her work inspired me to think bigger: what if we built a hub where students could create and share tools like these with each other?
That's how Guild was born—an open-source student hub for building, sharing, and using solutions that make university life easier.
Our Vision
Guild isn't just my project—it's a collaborative space. The goal is to empower students of UOWD (and beyond) to identify problems they face, build simple solutions, and share them with others.
We believe in three core principles:
Build: Create practical tools that solve real student problems, from timetable planning to grade calculations.
Share: Open-source everything so others can learn, contribute, and build upon your work.
Grow: Develop your technical skills while making a meaningful impact on your university community.
What We've Built So Far
Timetable Picker: Now upgraded to scrape live data. No more manual planning—let the tool find your perfect schedule that avoids conflicts with work or early mornings.
WAM/GPA Calculator: Parse your grades directly from SOLS—no manual data entry needed. Just paste and calculate. Includes detailed analytics for those who love diving into their academic data.
FAQ Chatbot: RAG-powered AI that answers questions directly from university documentation. No more hunting through endless PDFs to find simple answers.
Join the Movement
I'm inviting all UOWD students to contribute, collaborate, and innovate. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced developer, there's a place for you in our community.
Let's solve problems together, one tool at a time.
